RFID Installations

The University Library of Bern is introducing RFID (radio-frequency identification), a modern security and circulation management technology, at four further locations. This applies to the following locations

Medical Library
Law Library
Swiss Library of Eastern Europe
Münstergasse Library
Temporary restrictions possible
At the Medical Library and the Münstergasse Library, new security gates will be installed in the entrance areas during the week beginning 6 July, which may cause minor temporary restrictions and noise disturbance. RFID self-check-out machines will also be installed in the Medical Library, the Law Library and the Münstergasse Library, enabling users to collect and return their items independently of our counter opening hours.

The self-checkout service will start:

At the Medical Library from 13 July 2026
At the JBB Law Library from 17 August 2026
At the Münstergasse Library from the start of the 2026/27 autumn semester

From 13 July 2026 until 6 August 2026, the collections of the four libraries mentioned above will be fitted with RFID tags, which may result in temporary restrictions on use.
