The University Library of Bern (UB Bern) provides access to books and journals, specialized databases, e-journals, and e-books. In addition, it supports researchers, faculty, and students with courses on research, writing, and citation, as well as resources and infrastructure for scholarly publishing.

Books as Data

Discover 140 million pages of intellectual history digitally

The “Books as Data” platform provides researchers with an extensive corpus of digitized books from the years 1700 to 1900. The approximately 450,000 volumes can be searched in full text, downloaded, and further processed for research purposes. The collection thus constitutes a unique digital knowledge space in Switzerland. The project is supported by the University Libraries of Bern and Basel, the Zurich Central Library, and the Lucerne Central and University Library.

Research Skills@vonRoll

In addition to workshops on searching educational databases and using the AI research tool Consensus, Research Skills@vonRoll now offers a four-part course series on literature research for bachelor’s theses in the humanities and social sciences. The program for the fall semester of 2026 is now available online.

Read and Publish

Open access quotas for Wiley and IEEE exhausted

The annual article quotas for free open access publishing in Wiley and IEEE journals under the read-and-publish agreements have been exhausted for 2026. No article processing charges (APCs) can be covered under these agreements until the end of 2026.

Workshop

Research with Social Media Data

The workshop ‘Research with Social Media Data’, to be held on 24 September 2026, will discuss the effect of the Digital Services Act on Swiss researchers with a focus on access options for social media data as well as the consequences for research data management and data sharing.
