Everyday life in 19th century Bern

Many of the print samples contain references to the printing number, type of paper and the printer. These printing data were recorded on the printing samples by hand. In chronological order, they tell stories about everyday life in Bern’s society at the time. Thereby, the collection offers manifold glimpses into the social history of the Canton and the city of Bern.

As the printing company Haller enjoyed the privilege of being the official printing office the life and activities of local offices are very well documented.

Depending on the order situation at the time, samples from the following areas were filed:
