Hospinian collection
The collection of Leonhard Hospinian (German name: Wirth) is among the earliest holdings of the University Library Bern. In 1586 the Bibliothek auf der Schule received 243 volumes bequeathed by Hospinian's son-in-law Johannes Fädminger. As a professor of Latin Hospinian (1505?-1564) was a Renaissance humanist, who acquired valuable editions on his study trips.
Numerous annotations in Greek and Hebrew reveal that he was a keen and gifted scholar. He was erudite in theology, history, rhetoric, and natural sciences as well as Latin and Greek classics, which is reflected in the diversity of his collection. It harbors six incunabula.
