Atlas lifting the firmament
The title page (shelfmark: MUE Kart III 7 : 1B) shows Atlas, a king from Greek mythology who was responsible for lifting the weight of the entire firmament on his shoulders. The sheet is signed with „TOT AMSTERDAM / Bij IUSTUS DANCKERS in de Calverstraet inde Dancbaerheijt” (= In Amsterdam, at Justus Danckerts‘ in Calverstraat, [in the house] „Gratitude“).
An additional annotation in the printed, two-columned table of contents (shelfmark: MUE Kart III 7 : 1A) indicates that the Bernese copy of the atlas was published by Theodorus Danckerts, hence by the last generation. The table of contents lists the maps in Latin.
