Publishing open access without a read and publish agreement

The University of Bern no longer has a read-and-publish agreement with Springer Nature as of January 1, 2026.

OA via the repository

Researchers can choose the "closed" option (subscription route) for hybrid journals published by Nature Springer and republish their accepted manuscript on BORIS Portal, the University of Bern's repository. The following points should be noted:

Embargo

Springer Nature imposes an embargo of six to twelve months for secondary publication (accepted manuscript) on a repository.
Rights retention (authors retain the right to secondary publication) is not accepted by the publisher for the subscription route.

License

The accepted manuscript may not be republished with a Creative Commons license or any other open license.

Research funding

The OA requirements for SNF and EU projects cannot be met under these terms and conditions of the publisher Springer Nature (embargo, no open license).

OA Gold Journals at Springer Nature

At present, neither the OA Fund of the University of Bern nor the SNF finance APCs of Gold OA journals published by Springer Nature.

Other Gold Journals

For publications in journals that are not part of Springer Nature, financial support can be requested from the OA Fund, provided that the relevant criteria are met.

Alternatives

With the BISON tool, you can enter the title, abstract, and/or references of your article in the search fields. BISON will show you a number of possible OA journals for your article.
