The online portal “Кавказский узел» / “Caucasian knot” is one of the most important source of information for the Caucasus, and especially for its Northern – Russian – part. As one of the very few independent media outlets in the region, it reports on local politics, ecology and the situation of human rights, against the tide and the rising pressure by the government. An indispensable source of information for inhabitants and researchers alike, it also engages its readership as information sources/providers. Grigory Shvedov, co-founder and editor-in-chief of “Caucasian knot”, will talk about the online portal’s development, successes and challenges, the role of the digital media space in promoting and defending human rights, and the situation of the media in the Caucasus.
